Flyfishing Pack Trips
We have found that Mid October is the best time for pack trips into
our area. The flies are gone, the weather is mild, animals are abundant, and fall colors
are in full. You will be assigned your own horse for your stay.
You will be able to stay at the ranch the night prior to your departure to our wilderness
camp. At our back-country camp you will enjoy horseback riding, sightseeing,
photographing wildlife and scenery, and some great meals.
Your guide will take your group from camp on scenic trail rides, spotting for wildlife,
flyfishing,and photographing. Your day will be full of camp activities such as trail
riding, sightseeing, photographing, flyfishing and horsemanship.

October 7: Arrival into Bozeman, Montana. Transportation will be provided
to the Covered Wagon Ranch. Your cabin will be well stocked with firewood. Dinner will be
awaiting you at the main lodge. Fishing is available out your front door on the Gallatin
and Taylor Fork Rivers.
Day 1: After a good nights rest your breakfast is awaiting you at the main lodge.
Your Fly fishing guide will meet you around 8:00 to take you in a drift boat on one of many
famous trout streams that are in the area. Fly fishing from a driftboat consist of
floating an average of 10 river miles. Your guide will prepare your shore lunch, teach you
skills of fishing and give you more enthusiasm for the sport. If your casting drys to the
banks, nymphing a riffle or stripping a streamer, you can be assured of an action packed
day. Supper that night is awaiting you at the Ranch. Feel free to Fish that evening walk
down to the corrals to see the horses or relax on your front deck of your cabin.

Day 2: Morning will come early. After breakfast you will meet the rest of the
staff that will take you into the Lee Metcalf Wilderness. You will be set up with your own
horse for the 3 night 4 day pack trip. Watching and participating in packing the horses
has been enjoyable for most of our guests.
This day you will also learn horsemanship skills. After about a 9
mile horseback ride you will find our base camp at 8000 feet. In the
base camp your 14x17 wall tent is dry, roomy and warm. Your lunch is
prepared in our 18x23 cook tent complete with running hot and cold
water. The shower tent, toilet tent, sleep tent and cook tent are
all heated and equipped with propane lanterns. An evening ride is a
nice way to wrap up the day.
Day 3: The sun rises around 6:30 the air is crisp and
fresh. This time of the year there are no biting flies and the
weather is generally mild. Not to hot and not too cold. We recommend
bringing a good supply of warm waterproof clothing. See also USEFULL
EQUIPMENT. A variety of activities is available such as riding to
the top of some peaks which will put you around 10900 feet were you
can see Mountain Goats, Raptors, and some spectacular scenery. A
camera is a must.
Day 4: After breakfast, a day ride into one of our high
mountain lakes is both enjoyable and scenic. Seeing elk, moose,
bear, and wolves are not uncommon. This time of the year elk are in
the rut and hearing bugling along with wolves howling is common in
the mornings and the evenings.
Day 5: After a hardy breakfast you guide will take you to
one of many places that best suits your interests. In the afternoon
we will get on the trail and ride back to the ranch. Your cabin
still awaits you and the evening can be enjoyed with more fishing,
or relaxing in your cabin.
Day 6: Your fly fishing guide will meet you at the ranch
following breakfast. Depending on the stream reports and the weather
your 2nd day of Fly Fishing could be spent in one of several areas.
After the day spent fishing you will have the choice to stay another
night at the ranch or stay at a motel near the airport. We can
assure you that your trip will be most memorable, safe and
